36 North is an acoustic rock and Americana band formed around the amazing and thoughtful songwriting of Matt Conable. The group got together in April of 2014 and wasted little time in making a big impression on the music scene around the Monterey Bay area in California. Built around Matt’s smooth vocals and exceptional songwriting, 36 North includes David Trustman on upright bass and Kinsha Em on cajon and other percussion.  Everybody sings and 36 North is most distinctive for their beautiful layered three part harmonies.

You may be wondering about the name 36 North. It pays homage to our hometown of Santa Cruz, which is located at the coordinates 36 North/122 West.

36 North’s influences range from Johnny Cash to the Beatles to Tom Waits to Jason Mraz to Zac Brown Band and beyond.  They are three distinct musical spirits with a lifetime of music experience coming together to make one sweet sound.  The band takes the time to treat each song, original or cover, as an opportunity to create something special and meaningful.  With an extensive and growing playlist, no song is added to a live set until every aspect has been really worked through so that the whole of the musicians contributions is greater than the sum of their parts, which means that it has truly been made special, worth the band’s effort and the audience’s full attention.
Matt Conable – Songwriter, Guitar, Vocals
Matt is a singer/songwriter who describes his music as ‘rock and roll with a hint of sunburnt Americana’.  Based in Santa Cruz, his life includes making music with MCB, surfing the north coast, spending time with his wife, kids, dogs and cats, and running William Henry, the company he founded in 1997.
He started playing music as a kid, and never really stopped though he had along sabbatical from performing as life got in the way.  Back in the saddle, writing songs at a furious pace and performing almost every week, Matt writes and sings from the heart across a wide range of styles and topics.  “music is in all of us, across time and across cultures. making music and sharing it with others, in the band and in the audience, is one of the purest experiences I have ever found, and I chase it down whenever I can…”  matt conable

He began playing electric and upright bass in his mid-twenties and went back to UNR to study jazz on the upright. After moving to Santa Cruz, he continued his music studies at Cabrillo College and then at San Jose State University, earning a BA on upright bass and an MA in Music Education. He also spent many years with the Truckee Alliance for the Musical Arts (TAMA) as a musician, producer, director, and as president of the board.
